Bergen County resident Brendan Stock has his eyes on obtaining the rank of Eagle Scout, with a Service Project hoping to make a big impact on the community.
Stock and seven volunteer friends, with the help of Stock’s father and SportProsUSA, recently finished a complete basketball court upgrade in Hillburn, NY. The court was in serious disrepair with deep cracks across the surface, faded lines, and missing hoops and nets.
“The Eagle Scout is the highest rank you can earn as a Boy Scout,” Stock Said. To become an Eagle Scout, Stock will need to complete his Eagle Scout Service Project. The project is an opportunity for a Scout to demonstrate leadership while performing a project for the benefit of the community and is the culmination of the Scout’s leadership training.
“I’ve been Scouting since first grade,” said Stock, who is a member of Boy Scout Troop 59 in Allendale, NJ. “We normally have a lot of trips and activities, but this year has been different because of COVID,” he said. He knew he wanted to do something that would have an impact on a local community for years to come.
The 16-year-old Northern Highlands Junior has until his 18th birthday to complete the project, including the Eagle Scout Workbook and fundraising, but Stock is finishing his project early. “A few people started doing it early, so our entire grade decided to complete it together,” said Stock.
The first phase of any Eagle Scout project involves a lot of planning and getting approval from the Boy Scout Council. Stock said he contemplated which project he wanted to do, did a lot of local research and ultimately received approval from the town of Hillburn’s mayor to do the basketball court upgrade. He watched hours of how-to tutorials, planned his process, and enlisted the help of local basketball court company, SportProsUSA, for material and tools.
With the physical work done, Stock is now finishing the project with fundraising and the completion of the workbook. He feels proud of the work he’s done so far and is excited for the upcoming Eagle Scout Award Ceremony.
“The biggest thing I’ve learned through my entire time with the Boy Scouts is leadership,” remarked Stock. “But my favorite part has been the friends and people that I’ve met along the way.”
