What you should know about buying synthetic ice:
1. You get what you pay for.
Cheaper synthetic ice products cut corners by using extrusion to manufacture their surface as well as dovetail joints for connecting them. Both are problematic as the quality will degrade at a rapid rate. Sinter-pressed materials and tongue and groove connections mean durability throughout the rink´s lifetime. In short, if it looks like a puzzle, it will give you headaches.
2. Self-lubrication is essential.
There is nothing worse for your clothing than falling on a rink covered in lubricant. Not to mention the fact that the glide will be inconsistent throughout the rink and heavily dependent on applying the lubricant.
3. Tongue and Groove is the groove.
More complex and costly to manufacture, tongue and groove means quick and easy assembly and more importantly seamless connections EVERY time you assemble the rink. Bad press on dovetail, jigsaw joints abounds and a quick google search will demonstrate this point.
4. Prove it.
If the material makes claims, it should back them up with a warranty. Synthetic ice manufactured at a high molecular weight should be durable in even extreme conditions. So ask for a warranty.
